The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
