Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Originally described as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
